The Economy
Civil War Plantation in the south.
The economy of the Union was a big deal in the causes of the Civil War. In the southern states, agriculture was a big part of the economy. Their very way of life was all based on plantations that produced cotton, tobacco, and other crops. Cotton was a big crop in the south, especially when the Cotton Gin was invented by Eli Whitney. The cotton gin made it much easier to separate the seeds from the cotton, meaning that they'll make more money. Since they were making more money, they wanted even more money by using cheap labor. The cheapest labor were slaves. In the northern states, the economy was mainly based on industrialization and city life. It uses the cotton produced in the south to finalize the product.
Since the North wanted to take the slave away, the south would lose money and they believed their way of life was at state. After the Election of Lincoln, and Lincoln saying that he would not ban slavery, but let it die out without allowing it to expand. The southern states were thinking of secession.

Abolitionist Problems
John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry.
The Abolitionist wanted to stop Slavery as a whole. They wanted to stop slavery, and the slave holders who own the slaves. Because of this reason, there were many incidents among the Abolitionist(Anti-Slavery) and Pro-Slavery people. A slave's master, who had traveled with his slave into the free territories of Illinois and Wisconsin, had died. Dred Scott, the slave, sued for his freedom since he was held in the free territories as a slave. Although this was true, Chief Justice Taney had pointed out that...
-African Americans were counted as property; therefore it's unconstitutional to take him from the slave holders.
-African Americans weren't counted as citizens of the United States.
Another person who had tried to become free was Anthony Burns, who was arrested since the Fugitive Slave Act was put in place. People had tried to help Anthony escape. Since the president at the time had supported Slavery, he used force to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act. Because of this use of force, it persuaded people to join and become Abolitionists.
